What a great coincidence that Juneau opens the tour season during National Travel & Tourism Week! I’m always amazed at the number of people I meet who began their work lives and/or found lifetime careers in the visitor and hospitality field. Not only do they love the work, but they see the benefits that travel brings to their communities.

U.S. Travel Association, sponsors of National Travel & Tourism Week, points out what you may already know:

  • The industry supports 15.3 million American workers—8.6 million directly and 6.7 million indirectly. Here in Juneau, the industry supports almost 3,000 direct travel and related jobs.
  • One in every 9 U.S. jobs depends on travel
  • Travel generates $2.3 trillion for the U.S. economy
  • Direct travel spending in the U.S. totaled $990.3 billion by domestic and international travelers in 2016. The local industry generates approximately 20% of CBJ’s sales tax revenues!

What you do is important and ripples far into the borough in terms of economic impact. The long days and hard work don’t just benefit your company, they benefit the Juneau community: providing seasonal jobs that support families and students, helping young adults earn college and training money, and allowing your company to support the efforts of local schools and community organizations.  That hard work also helps ensure memorable, positive customer experiences so visitors will return to Juneau.

So, in honor of National Travel & Tourism Week, as you prep for your next guests and clients, take a moment and give yourself and your colleagues a well-deserved pat on the back.

Regards, and thank you for being part of Travel Juneau!
