I hope you have heard the phrase, “Meetings mean business.”

That phrase is at least as true now as when it was coined by the Meetings Mean Business Coalition in 2009. Whether it’s a group meeting (gathering of associations, companies or professions), conference or exhibition, these events mean new dollars to Juneau.

It’s for no small reason that Travel Juneau cultivates meeting business for our community. One of our initiatives, the Bring it Home program, encourages residents to work with us to book association, professional, and other meetings in Juneau. As we make headway in this area, I’m asking Travel Juneau members to consider how they can assist us in securing new meetings.

$4 of every $10 spent on business travel in the U.S. “can be attributed to meetings and events – proving its significant value to national, state, and local economies,” according to a recent report from the MMB Coalition.

Does your business receive a meeting welcome sign for your storefront? How about providing a modest discount to attendees during their Juneau visit? Or a small, useful or consumable item for their delegate bags? These are a few ideas that let planners know we value their business and welcome meeting participants – which can help bring more traffic through your doors.

Think about the jobs and revenue generated from a gathering that brings attendees from out of town: hotel stays, facility rental, restaurant spending, retail purchases, and the associated sales tax that applies to all of these. Travel Juneau calculates that an event with 60 people staying 5 days can generate more than $94,000 in estimated economic impact; a meeting of 150 over the same time frame can generate more than $216,000 in impact.

We look forward to hearing your ideas – we have events on the horizon, so if your business would like to get more involved right away, please let Kirk know:
